About

This is a website of various family media that aims to provide an experience of browsing through collections of now-digitized physical items belonging to Gil and Marilyn Den Hartog. It will continue to be updated as the digitization work proceeds.

A word from the web dev

I took this project on primarily because I wanted to build my understanding of vanilla JavaScript as a language - Some solutions would surely have been much easier via the many frameworks and libraries available, but problem solving with just the tools that js provides helped to round out the fundamentals. And of course, the creative side was very rewarding - Putting together a sort of "virtual library" of my grandparents' old media is a compelling idea that I'm motivated to continue on with.

A word from the media preservationist

This is the oral and visual history of the lives and missionary work of John Gilbert DenHartog and Marilyn Sophia DenHartog. It is a story of two cherished members of my family, but its value goes beyond personal importance. Through old pictures, recordings, and letters, it is an exploration of a different time and place, and has that strange appeal held by impermanence and ephemera. For my whole life I have heard this history in bits and pieces - the occasional anecdote, photograph, or traditional dish. It is in the interest of preservation and curiosity that I set out to do this project.
